（2） 情态动词在一般否定句中的用法。

①can’t（can not，cannot）表示不可能或表示怀疑、不相信等态度。

例如：

He can’t finish his essay by this time. 现在他不可能写完论文。

No，no，this can’t be true. 不，不，这不可能是事实。

②may not表示“不可以”或“可能不”。

例如：

People may not pick flowers in this garden. 本园的花不得攀折。

He may not sleep now. 他或许现在没有睡觉。

She may not be there today. 今天她可能不在那儿。

③mustn’t（must not）表示“一定不要”、“不许可”、“绝对禁止”。

例如：

You mustn’t criticize her in that way． 你不应该那样批评她。

We mustn’t stay here any longer． 我们不能再在这里待下去了。

④needn’t（need not）表示“不必”。

例如：

You needn’t come tomorrow． 你明天没必要来。

So I needn’t tell him，need I？ 所以我无须告诉他，对吧？

⑤“dare not＋动词原形”表示“不敢”。

例如：

He daren’t even look out. 他甚至不敢向外望。

He dare not meet his fiancée． 他不敢见他的未婚妻。
