The biggest safety threat (威胁) facing airlines today may not be a terrorist (恐怖分子) with a gun, but the man with the portable (便于携带的) computer in business class (级别). In the last 15 years, pilots (飞行员) have reported well over 100 incidents (事件) that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference (干涉). The source (来源) of this interference remains unconfirmed (确定), but increasingly (越来越多地), experts are pointing the blame (指责) at portable electronic device (装置) such as portable computers, radio and cassette (磁带) players and mobile telephones.
RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry (行业), has recommended (推荐) that all airlines ban (禁止) such devices from being used during “critical (关键的)” stages of flight, particularly (特别地) take-off and landing (着陆). Some experts have gone further, calling for (要求) a total ban during all flights. Currently (目前), rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit (禁止) passengers (乘客) from using such equipment (设备) during take-off and landing, most are reluctant (不情愿的) to enforce (实施,执行) a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights.
The difficulty is predicting (预测) how electromagnetic fields (场) might affect an aircraft’s computers. Experts know that portable device emit (发出) radiation (辐射) which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation (导航) and communication (通讯). But, because they have not been able to reproduce (重现) these effects in a laboratory (实验室), they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.
The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受损的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage (损害) navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud.
